Garage Door Panel Replacement in New Jersey

We replace damaged garage door panels across New Jersey.

A technician first checks whether one section can be replaced or whether the damage points to a larger problem with the door. Panels are heavy and the door is under spring tension, so this is technician work.

What panel replacement is

A sectional garage door is built from horizontal panels, also called sections, joined by hinges and guided by rollers in the tracks. Panel replacement means removing one damaged section and fitting a new one in its place, without replacing the whole door.

We replace panels that are cracked, split, bent, crushed or punched through. We also replace sections that were damaged when a vehicle struck the door or when the door came off its track.

Signs you need a panel replaced

  • A dent has creased or folded the panel, not just pressed it in.
  • The panel is cracked, split or has a hole.
  • The section is bowed, and the door rubs or catches in the tracks.
  • The hinges at the damaged section have pulled loose or torn from the panel.
  • The door sags or hangs crooked after an impact.
  • Moisture has damaged a bottom section, which is common where water sits at the threshold.

Some damage is cosmetic and some is structural. Our guide on dented or cracked panels: repair or replace helps you tell the difference. Scratches and shallow dents can sometimes be repaired, though marks may remain.

What we do on a panel replacement visit

The technician inspects the damage and confirms the cause before ordering or removing anything. Impact that bent a panel can also bend a track or strain the opener.

  1. We inspect the damaged section, the neighboring panels, the hinges, rollers, tracks and the opener.
  2. We identify the door so the correct section can be matched by position (top, middle or bottom), size and color.
  3. We secure the door and relieve load on the section before any hardware is removed.
  4. We remove the damaged panel, then fit the new one with its hinges and rollers.
  5. We check the door for level, smooth travel and balance, and run it through full cycles with the opener.
  6. We test the safety reverse and sensors where an opener is installed, and tell you what else we saw.

Can one panel be matched to your door

Not always. One manufacturer notes that replacement panels may no longer be available for older doors, and that custom or specialty styles are harder to replace. Fading can also make a new section look different from the weathered ones around it.

We check what can be sourced for your door at the inspection. If a matching section is not available or the door has other wear, we explain the options, including new garage door installation. Manufacturers also point out that a panel repair does not improve insulation or energy efficiency.

What affects the scope of the work

  • Which section is damaged. Bottom sections carry the bottom brackets and often the seal, so they involve more hardware.
  • Whether the panel is available for your door model and style.
  • Door size, material and whether it is insulated or has windows.
  • Hinge, roller or track damage that comes with the panel damage.
  • Whether the door is still square and its springs and cables are sound.
  • The age and condition of the rest of the door.

Safety: do not remove panels on your own

Heavy sections and a door under tension

A garage door is heavy and its springs and bottom brackets hold dangerous tension. DASMA states that repairs and adjustments must be done only by a trained door systems technician. Do not remove a bottom section or loosen bracket hardware yourself, and do not run the opener on a door with a damaged panel or one that binds. Keep people and vehicles clear of the door and bring in a technician.

Repair the panel or replace the door

When damage is limited to one or two sections and the door is otherwise sound, replacing the panel is often practical. Manufacturer guidance suggests that doors over about 15 years old may be better replaced as a whole, and that frame damage or outdated parts can tip the decision. Read repair or replace the whole door for the full picture.

If the door is off its track or the springs failed too, see off-track door repair and spring replacement. For general work, see garage door repair.

Questions and answers

Can you replace just one panel instead of the whole door?

Often yes, when the damage is limited to one or two sections and a matching panel is available for your door. We confirm availability at the inspection.

Will the new panel match my existing door?

It may not match exactly. Availability depends on the door model, and fading can make a new section look different from older ones. We tell you what we find.

Can I replace a damaged panel myself?

We advise against it. Panels are heavy, and the door sits under spring tension. DASMA directs homeowners to a trained door systems technician for repairs and adjustments.

Is a dented panel always worth replacing?

No. Shallow dents may be repairable, and some are cosmetic only. A creased, cracked or binding panel usually needs replacement. See dented or cracked garage door panels.

Does a new panel make the door more energy efficient?

Not by itself. A panel replacement restores the door but does not improve insulation. See insulated vs non-insulated garage doors.
