A door off its track is unstable and can be dangerous to move. Our technicians inspect, confirm the cause, and reset or repair the door.
What off-track repair is
A door is off track when one or more rollers have left the track, or the door has shifted out of its guides. It may hang crooked, jam partway, or sit open at an angle. The door is no longer held where it should be, and the springs and cables are still under tension.
Off-track repair means finding why the door came off, repairing the damage, and putting the door back in its tracks in proper alignment. It is not just popping a roller back in.
Signs your door is off track
- The door is crooked, with one side higher than the other.
- One or more rollers are out of the track, or the track is visibly bent.
- A cable is loose or hanging.
- The door jammed partway, or the opener runs but the door barely moves.
- There is a gap between the door and the jamb or the floor.
- Panels look buckled or twisted.
Common triggers include a vehicle bump, a failed cable or spring, or a bent track. Our guide on a door off its track covers what to do and what not to do. Related: door hangs crooked.
What we do on an off-track repair visit
The technician inspects and confirms the cause first. We do not assume the door can simply be reset.
- We make the door safe to work on, and inspect tracks, rollers, hinges, cables, springs, brackets and panels.
- We confirm why the door came off and what is damaged.
- We explain the repair and what else needs attention.
- We release or control tension as needed and remove the door from its off-track position.
- We repair or replace the bent track, rollers, hinges, cable or panels that the inspection shows.
- We reset the door in the tracks, restore balance, and run it through full cycles with the opener. Sensors and safety reverse are tested.
Resetting without repair can leave the cause in place, so we address it before the door goes back in service.
What affects the scope of the repair
- What caused it: impact, a failed cable or spring, a bent track or loose mounting.
- Whether tracks, rollers, hinges or panels are bent or damaged.
- Whether the cable, drum or spring also failed. See cable repair and spring replacement.
- How far the door twisted before it stopped.
- Whether the opener was run against the stuck door and also needs work.
Safety: do not run an off-track door
Stop, keep clear and do not try to fix it
A door off its track can fall or shift without warning. The CPSC says a severely unbalanced door could unexpectedly crash to the floor, and that unbalanced or binding doors should be serviced by a professional. Do not run the door with the opener, do not try to close it, and do not force it back into the track. Do not touch springs, cables or bottom brackets. DASMA states these hold extreme tension and should be handled only by a trained technician. Keep people, children, pets and vehicles clear.
Read when a garage door is unsafe to use. If the door is stuck, see stuck open or closed.
Off-track repair or replacement
Many off-track doors are repairable. If panels are twisted or the door is no longer sound, we say so at the inspection and explain replacement. See track repair, roller replacement, garage door repair and new garage door installation.

Questions and answers
Can I push my garage door back on its track?
No. An off-track door can be unstable, and the springs and cables are still under tension. Do not force it. Keep clear and bring in a technician.
Can I use the opener to close an off-track door?
No. Running the opener can bend the track, damage panels or make the door fall. Leave the release alone unless your manual describes it for a door you can control. See using the manual release safely.
Why did my door come off track?
Common causes are an impact, a loose or bent track, a failed cable or a broken spring. The technician confirms which at the inspection.
Will the door need new parts?
Sometimes. It depends on what the inspection finds, such as bent tracks, damaged rollers or panels.
