Garage Door Roller Replacement in New Jersey

We replace worn, noisy and damaged garage door rollers across New Jersey.

Our technicians inspect the tracks and hinges, confirm why the rollers failed, then fit rollers that suit your door.

What roller replacement is

Rollers are the wheels that ride along the tracks as the door moves up and down. Clopay, a door manufacturer, describes them this way. They sit in the hinges along each side of the door, and the bottom roller on many doors is held in the bottom bracket. Rollers wear with use, and a worn roller adds friction, noise and strain on the rest of the system.

Replacement means removing worn rollers and fitting new ones that fit the door and the track. Rollers differ in material, such as nylon or steel. Our guide on nylon vs steel rollers explains the difference.

Signs you need rollers replaced

  • The door is noisy, with rattling, scraping or grinding as it moves.
  • A roller wobbles in the track, or has a flat spot or cracked wheel.
  • A roller has come out of the track or is missing.
  • The door shakes or jerks as it travels.
  • The opener strains or the door seems rough when lifted by hand.
  • Hinges are worn or bent where a roller stem sits.

Noise has many causes, and rollers are only one. See why a garage door is noisy, by sound and door shakes or jerks.

What we do on a roller replacement visit

The technician inspects and confirms the cause first. A noisy or rough door can come from rollers, but also from dry hinges, bent tracks or an unbalanced door.

  1. We inspect the rollers, hinges, tracks, brackets, cables, springs and panels.
  2. We confirm whether the rollers are the cause, and check the tracks for dents and misalignment.
  3. We explain what we will replace and why.
  4. We replace the worn rollers and any worn or bent hinges that hold them.
  5. We lubricate the parts that call for it, and leave the tracks themselves unlubricated.
  6. We check balance and travel, then run full cycles with the opener and test the sensors and safety reverse.

Clopay advises against adding lubricant to the tracks themselves, since it makes rollers harder to move and the opener work harder, and against lubricating nylon rollers.

What affects the scope of the work

  • How many rollers are worn, and whether the door has the same type throughout.
  • Roller material and size that fit your door and tracks.
  • The condition of the hinges and the track where the roller runs.
  • Whether the bottom rollers sit in brackets that carry cable tension, which changes how those rollers are handled.
  • Whether bent tracks or an unbalanced door caused the wear.

Safety: some rollers sit on tensioned parts

Do not remove bottom rollers yourself

On many doors the bottom roller is held in the bottom bracket, and DASMA states these brackets are under extreme tension and should be adjusted or loosened only by a trained door systems technician. Do not loosen bracket hardware. If a roller has come out of the track, the door may be unstable. Do not run it with the opener or force it. Keep people and vehicles clear and bring in a technician.

What you can do safely is look and listen from the floor, and keep the door clean. Our annual maintenance checklist lists homeowner checks, and what to lubricate explains lubrication.

Roller replacement or other repair

New rollers solve a worn-roller problem. They do not fix a bent track, a failing spring or a door out of balance, and we tell you if the inspection points elsewhere. See track repair, off-track door repair and maintenance and tune-ups, or garage door repair overall.

Questions and answers

How do I know a roller is worn?

Signs include noise, a wobbling wheel, a flat or cracked roller, and a rough, jerky door. A technician confirms the cause. See why a garage door is noisy.

Should I lubricate my rollers?

Clopay says to lubricate rollers except nylon ones, and not to lubricate the tracks themselves. Check your door maker's instructions. See what to lubricate.

Can I replace rollers myself?

Top and middle rollers are within reach, but bottom rollers on many doors sit in tensioned brackets. DASMA says those brackets should be adjusted only by a trained technician, so we advise leaving roller replacement to us.

Are nylon or steel rollers better?

It depends on the door and how it is used. The technician can explain the options for your door. See nylon vs steel rollers.
