Garage door off its track: what to do and what not to do
If your garage door has come off its track, stop using it. Learn the signs, why it happens, what to do right now and what never to try yourself.
A garage door that has come off its track is unsafe to use and unsafe to fix yourself. The weight is held by springs and cables under tension, and a partly derailed door can drop. This guide explains what to do right now, and what to leave alone until a technician arrives.
What to do right now
Stop all use of the door
Do not press the remote or wall button, do not try to lift or lower the door by hand, and do not use the manual release. Do not push or kick the door back into the track. Keep people, pets and vehicles away from the door. Do not touch the springs, cables or brackets.
- Stop all use of the door. Affordable Door Co says to stop all door operation immediately and not press the opener button.
- Keep everyone clear, including children and pets, and do not stand or reach under a partly open door.
- If you can reach the opener's plug without going near or under the door, unplug it so no one can start it by accident, as Affordable Door Co advises.
- Leave the door where it is.
- Take photos from a safe distance. Show the gap, the roller position and any bent metal. They help a technician plan the repair.
- Arrange a technician to inspect the door. See off-track door repair.
Why it is dangerous
The door's weight is only safely managed by the spring system, according to Engineer Fix. Affordable Door Co says a partly derailed door can drop suddenly, slide off its remaining rollers, or cause a secondary cable failure. Uneven weight can knock more rollers out of the track and make the problem worse.
Running the opener makes it worse. Affordable Door Co says the opener can force a partly derailed door into the track, a vehicle, or off the rail entirely, and Engineer Fix says running the opener on a derailed door can damage the tracks, panels and opener. Clopay says if the door is off track, stop operating it immediately and contact a trained technician.
How to tell a door is off its track
- The door looks crooked, uneven, or hangs lower on one side.
- A roller is out of the track channel, or you can see a gap between the rollers and track.
- Gaps appear between the door and its frame. Clopay lists this with crooked appearance as a sign.
- The track is dented or warped near where a roller came out.
- A cable is slack, frayed or off its drum or pulley.
- There is a bang, scraping or a door that jams partway.
Look, but do not touch. Check from the floor and keep out of the door's path.
Why doors come off their tracks
The sources we read name these causes:
- Vehicle impact, which often bends panels or the track near the point of impact.
- A worn or broken roller, often showing as one side dragging.
- Loose track hardware that lets the track pull away from the wall.
- Spring failure, which can make the door drop on one side.
- Debris lodged in the track.
- Cable failure, which shifts the door's weight suddenly to one side.
Several of these are linked. A broken cable or spring often causes the derailment, and a derailment can then damage the cable. That is why a technician checks the whole system, not just the roller. Read more in frayed or snapped cable, bent or misaligned tracks and garage door rollers.
What you can safely check
You can look, from a safe distance, at the following. None of it needs you to touch the door.
- Note which side the problem is on and how far the door sits from level.
- Look at the tracks on both sides for visible bends, dents or gaps from the wall.
- Look at the lift cables at the bottom corners. Is either one slack, frayed or off its drum or pulley?
- Look at the springs. Is there a visible gap in a torsion coil or a stretched extension spring?
- Check whether the garage floor or the tracks have debris near where the roller left.
- Write down what happened. A vehicle hit, a bang or a gradual change helps explain the cause.
What not to try
- Do not push the door back onto the track. Affordable Door Co strongly advises against it, because a loaded door is heavy and under spring tension. Engineer Fix says never move the door manually if it is crooked or off the track.
- Do not loosen or adjust the bottom brackets. Affordable Door Co calls the bottom bracket one of the most dangerous components on the door.
- Do not wind or adjust springs. DASMA says spring systems should be repaired only by trained professionals.
- Do not hammer a bent track straight while the door is off, or bend it back with the door still hanging.
- Do not run the opener to see whether the door will go back on its own.
When to stop and bring in a technician
A door off its track always needs a technician. Clopay lists an off-track door among the problems to leave to a professional, and Engineer Fix lists snapped, frayed or unwound cables and tracks that are crushed, twisted or bent. Our technicians inspect the door, tracks, rollers, cables and springs, confirm the cause first, and then reset the door and replace the parts that failed. See track repair, cable repair, roller replacement and garage door repair.
If the door is stuck open or closed for another reason, see door stuck open or closed. If it is crooked but still in its tracks, see garage door hangs crooked. To judge any door, read when a garage door is unsafe to use.

Questions and answers
Can I push my garage door back onto the track myself?
No. Affordable Door Co strongly advises against it, because a loaded door is heavy and under spring tension. Leave it where it is and have a technician reset it.
Is it safe to use the opener on an off-track door?
No. The opener can force the door into the track or off the rail entirely and can damage the tracks, panels and opener.
What causes a garage door to come off its track?
Sources name vehicle impact, a worn or broken roller, loose track hardware, spring failure, debris in the track and cable failure.
Can I park in the garage while the door is off its track?
Keep vehicles and people away from the door area until it has been inspected. A partly derailed door can drop without warning.
Should I unplug the opener?
Affordable Door Co advises unplugging it so the door cannot be activated by accident, but only if you can reach the plug without going near or under the door.
